Kate James is a painter and scenic designer currently based in Kissimmee, Florida. She will graduate from Cornell University with a B.F.A. and a minor in Performing and Media Arts.

With a dual background in painting and scenic design, James’ work is deeply rooted in constructing narrative through location. She approaches her art with an observational documentary style, researching and designing immersive environments that function and heterotopias. James’ design process begins with extensive tectual research, pulling from a range of influences, including Magical Realism, Southern Gothic literature, and environmental non-fiction.

James’ work has been awarded several honors at Cornell University, including the John and Melissa Ceriale Travel Award, The David R. Bean Prize for Fine Art, B.F.A. Creative Funding Awards in Spring 2024 and Fall 2025, a Summer Experience Grant, and the Gibian -Rosewater Traveling Research Award.
